When you create a Canvas Assignment using Turnitin for checking similarity (plagiarism), it also reports how much of the paper appears to have been written by an AI like ChatGPT. When reviewing students’ submissions in Canvas SpeedGrader, clicking the Turnitin Flag Icon will open the Feedback Studio in a new tab. In addition to the similarity checking tools, you’ll see an AI score, indicating how much of this submission seems generated by AI.
The AI submission needs to meet the following parameters:
- File size must be less than 100 MB
- File must have at least 300 words of prose text in a long-form writing format
- File must not exceed 15,000 words
- File must be written in English
- Accepted file types: .docx, .pdf, .txt, .rtf

One final point. In Turnitin’s own words: Turnitin does not make a determination of misconduct, rather it provides data for educators to make an informed decision based on their academic and institutional policies. So assuming an instructor has made it clear that AI may not be used in an assignment, a high AI score would prompt a discussion with the student.
